Boris Could Be the Remainers Friend

Soon To Be Remainer Pinup Boris Johnson

So we'll have Boris Johnson as prime minister in a couple of days time.  What is he going to do?  Could he possibly be about to emerge as the remainers' greatest friend?

It is a bit far fetched, but remember this is a man who doesn't have any really strong opinions on the European Union.  He did write an article outlining some pretty good arguments for staying in after all.  His big aim all along has been to become prime minister.  He only pandered to the leavers to get there.   Now he is there his new problem is how to stay there.

When you are looking for friends, you need to find people who aren't currently your friend.  And although it is good to keep the friends that you have, you have to wonder whether the ERG crew are really the most reliable of  supporters.

He might well decide that he simply has to get some remainers on board with his premiership.  If so, what bones does he have to throw to them.  How about renogiating the deal, but not to extract more teeth from the EU.  How about offering a softer Brext .  How about the softest Brexit that anyone has ever talked about.

This would of course not be marketed as a soft Brexit.  It would be a 'Boris Brexit'.  He'd come up with some load of old bollocks about establishing a bridgehead for future developments and have some classical analogy for it. Sure the leavers would be furious - but they are going to be furious about something or other whatever he does.   Remainers can breathe a sigh of relief.

We can then get the bloody subject of Europe off the agenda.  In a few years time when everyone has calmed down we can quietly rejoin.  Nothing will have changed apart from having spent a huge wodge of cash on the most pointless project in British history.
