The Real Reason The UK Is Leaving The EU?

There's a technique in the Quality Assurance business called the 5 whys.  If you have a problem with a product or a process you ask why it happened 5 times.  Why did the brake fail?  The lining was too thin.  Why was it too thin? The drawing was wrong.  Why was it wrong?  The engineer hadn't been trained.  Why wasn't he trained?  There is no training department?  Why is there no training department?  The owner of the factory hasn't set one up.

Each why gets you closer to the root cause.

So let's apply it to Brexit.

Why are we leaving the EU?  Because the people voted in a referendum.

Why did we hold a referendum?  Because it would resolve an ongoing debate in the Conservative Party.

Why did that matter?  Because the Conservatives were losing voters to UKIP who were calling for a referendum.

Why were UKIP gaining votes?  Because there were a lot of anti-EU stories in the popular press.

And why did the popular press take against the EU?  Well we can't be sure but could it be to do with the bringing forward of legislation to crack down on tax avoidance by the mega rich?  I don't know, but the graph produced above from the Economist suggests that if it wasn't it was quite a coincidence.
