Why Brexit Is Driving Us Mad

When you work on a project there is often a key problem that needs to be solved before anything else can be achieved.  It makes sense to structure the project around the solution of that project.  Sure you can look into removal companies and disposing of old furniture before moving house.  But until you've found the new house and raised the cash to buy it, that has to be be the focus.

With Brexit there is one very clear problem that needs resolution.  Does the UK diverge from the rest of Europe, in which case the Irish border needs to be a hard one.  Or do we maintain our alignment allowing much the current arrangement to be maintained.

There isn't really a middle way between these two outcomes.  This goes to the heart of what Brexit is all about.  It is difficult in the sense that both options have very unappealing features.   But it isn't complicated.  We are either leaving and doing our own thing.  Or we simply modifying our relationship slightly.  If you don't know which one you want, or don't want to make a decision you aren't a Brexiter or a Remainer.  You are a ditherer.

That the current government doesn't seem to want to make the choice is the reason that Brexit continues to drive us all mad.
